The different parts of the armour of heavy-armed soldiers, who had to sustain the fiercest assaults of the enemy, are here described. There is none for the back; nothing to defend those who turn back in the Christian warfare. Truth, or sincerity, is the girdle. This girds on all the other pieces of our armor, and is first mentioned. There can be no religion without sincerity. The righteousness of Christ, imputed to us, is a breastplate against the arrows of Divine Wrath. The righteousness of Christ implanted in us, fortifies the heart against the attacks of Satan.
The devil is the wicked one. Violent temptations, by which the soul is set on fire of hell, are darts Satan shoots at us. Also, hard thoughts of God, and as to ourselves. Faith applying the word of God and the grace of Christ, quenches the darts of temptation. Salvation must be our helmet. A good hope of salvation, a Scriptural expectation of victory, will purify the soul, and keep it from being defiled by Satan.
Prayer must fasten all the other parts of our Christian armor. There are other duties of religion, and of our stations in the world, but we must keep up times of prayer. Though set and solemn prayer may not be seasonable when other duties are to be done, yet short pious prayers darted out, always are so. We must use holy thoughts in our ordinary course. A vain heart will be vain in prayer. We must pray with all kinds of prayer, public, private, and secret; social and solitary; solemn and sudden: with all the parts of prayer; confession of sin, petition for mercy, and thanksgiving for favors received. And we must do it by the grace of God the Holy Spirit, in dependence on, and according to, his teaching.

We are at a crossroads of the time when we will step off into an unknown, something that has long awaited a loving God. Man one with his Creator. We have been given a map to guide, a teacher to instruct and all who love and hold God dear will know. Let us not forget who created it all, and can recreate as He wills even better. He allowed America to come into existence for a purpose and in time we will all understand how great a purpose America is fulfilling in her destiny in this time. We don't understand anything about a King, but soon we will have one. He will have His sovereign subjects, and my hope is that I will only be worthy enough. I also tell you we all look through the same glass that is only a shadow of what will soon come to pass, because Gods ways are much higher than mans. A sovereign Nation is a gift of God, and if we keep ours it will be by joining with His divine order of life, and divine plan for life here and for eternity. The fight is in the heavenly realm, it will be won by the one who sits at Gods right hand, JESUS. All Glory to God now and forever. Steven

This article helped me tremendously. Thanks for the input on this subject. One thing I need to "shore up on" - prayer - we sometimes get toooo busy and don't take enough time for it.

George Washington considered that the USA has 3 Foundations: God, Morality, Self-Defense. His Military Strategies also included Wisdom, and his breaking with England included Individualism. John Adams, our 2nd President, accepted these and his "Balance of Powers" implicitly involved Individualism, although it has sometimes failed. James Madison, our 3rd President, exemplified Wisdom through Learning - he learned and changed throughout his life and ended up agreeing with Washington. Thomas Jefferson, our 4th President, added Individualism explicitly, although he backslid on God and Morality/Ethics.
These 5 Principles (God, Morality/Ethics, Self-Defense, Individualism, Wisdom) derive directly from the Bible and the 10 Commandments and Cardinal Virtues/Sins. Osher Doctorow |
